Millions of years ago, the remains of ancient plants were trapped in layers of mud, preventing normal decay. Shale can contain oil and natural gas in its layers. Shale is fine-grained, organic-rich, sedimentary rock. Shale gas is natural gas that has been mined from shale formations. Its awful rotten-egg odor comes from mercaptan, which is deliberately added to the gas as it’s processed so that you can smell a gas leak in your home or on your block. Methane is odorless, colorless, and tasteless. Other major sources of methane emissions include crude oil production, the cattle industry, and landfills. Close to 30% of those emissions came from the production, transmission, and distribution of oil and natural gas. In the absence of new regulations, methane emissions from the oil and gas sector are projected to rise more than 25% by 2025. Methane emissions accounted for about 10% of U.S. Too much of these gases in the atmosphere trap too much heat, fundamentally changing the climate of our planet. Greenhouse gases in our atmosphere trap the sun’s heat on our planet. Methane is a powerful greenhouse gas, many times more potent than carbon dioxide, which is currently the largest contributor to human-caused climate change.

The combustion of methane produces heat, water (H 20), and carbon dioxide (CO 2). It is a molecule, CH 4, made up of one carbon atom and four hydrogen atoms. Methane is the primary component of natural gas-typically about 70% to 90% by volume. We are a community of over one million parents united against air and climate pollution to protect our children’s health.
